The BJP and the AIADMK on Thursday demanded immediate resignation of Union home minister P Chidambaram after the Madras high court rejected his plea to strike off an election petition filed against him by his main opponent Raja Kannappan (AIADMK) in the 2009 Lok Sabha election.
BJP president Nitin Gadkari Gadkari demanded to know why Congress president Sonia Gandhi who had declared zero tolerance towards corruption is not getting Chidambaram to resign.
He lobbed the same question towards prime minister Manmohan Singh as well.
The BJP president also reiterated the other allegations Chidambaram is facing with regard to the 2G spectrum allocation scam and the Aircel-Maxis case involving his son, Karthi Chidambaram’s company. The BJP had boycotted Chidambaram during the 2011 winter session of parliament.
BJP national spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad clarified that his party’s demand for Chidambaram’s resignation was not just a pressure tactic. He said that even Congress leaders feel Chidambaram should quit on moral grounds. He pointed out that 27 out of the 29 charges of poll irregularities have been found to be valid and that the Congress leader would have to face trial based on these charges.
Prasad argued that as home minister, Chidambaram is responsible for the maintenance of law and order, and it is for this reason it is imperative that he steps down.
In Chennai, AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa also demanded Chidambaram’s immediate resignation.
“Chidambaram’s continuation as a union cabinet minister is a blot on the face of Indian democracy. He won the 2009 Lok Sabha election by fraudulent manner and our stand is that he should go,” Jayalalithaa said in a statement. She pointed out that Kannappan had challenged the election of Chidambaram with irrefutable documents.
